Western Colorado AHEC offers the following programs:

Epilepsy Outreach Program

WCAHEC is working in conjunction with the Colorado Epilepsy Foundation to provide Information, support and training on the topic of Epilepsy. Any group or organization may arrange for training free of charge. The two training's available are “Epilepsy First Aid” and the second is “It Could Be Epilepsy” – for law enforcement officers and support personnel. Certified Nurse Aide Training

Certified Nurse Aide Training is provided during evening (seven and one-half week) classes. A class includes 80 hours of classroom time and 40 hours of clinical's and runs Monday through Thursday from 5 pm to 9 pm at the 1405 Wellington Ave location. A basic class fee is $945 which includes background screening fee, books and Colorado Board of Nursing exam application. Continuing Education for Healthcare Professionals & Consumers

WCAHEC provides a multitude of continuing education each year throughout the region for health care providers and consumers alike. These are offered in half day, full day or multi-day workshops and are based on expressed interests throughout Western Colorado. Courses are accredited for nurses. Many courses are broadcast by interactive video conference to various rural locations. Should you have interest in seeing a specific offering in your area, please contact Natasha at nschuman@wcahec.org WCAHEC also contracts with a variety of other organizations to manage their continuing education activities. Student Housing Placement

WCAHEC supports the placement of students from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and other institutions of higher learning so that rural health professions rotations are successful and seamless. Students are assisted with identifying training sites. Area housing is arranged for them. Healthcare students are able to spend up to six weeks with rural health care providers to develop awareness of needs and services in rural areas and are encouraged to practice in rural areas upon completing their health care education. Two apartments with space for two students each are maintained year round in Grand Junction and one two-bedroom apartment is located in Durango. Community Health Navigation

WCAHEC offers training throughout rural and western Colorado in areas of drug/alcohol, tobacco use, teenage pregnancy, obesity and diabetes and other health-related topics with a focus on keeping our communities healthy. Community health Navigators are trained to deliver appropriate health messages to the individuals with whom they work. Consumers are also offered lifestyle-related education. Summer Health Career Institute/Career Shadowing

The Summer Health Institute is a unique experience for high school students that are interested in exploring health careers. Experiences include exposure to a variety of health care professions while staying on campus at Mesa State College followed by experiences at the University of Colorado in Boulder and the Health Sciences Center in Denver. Students are introduced to life on college campus, exploration of a variety of health careers, tours of health care facilities and discussions regarding career options. The WCAHEC Counselors will work closely with the students to ensure a worthwhile and fun experience. There are limited numbers of spots for this institute so students interested in participating are urged to contact their school counselors early or contact Natasha at nschuman@wcahec.org or 970-434-5474 x103.

Student Internships & Volunteering

Several types of professional, internships are available to high school and college students. Areas include (but are not limited to): Health Education, Public Health, Human Resources and help in establishing an internship in traditional and non-traditional medicine.
